Glenn Maxwell announces retirement from ODI cricket

Two-time World Cup winner Glenn Maxwell has officially retired from One-Day International (ODI) cricket to focus on Australia’s quest for the T20 World Cup title next year. Cricket Australia confirmed Maxwell’s decision on Monday.

The 36-year-old all-rounder featured in 149 ODIs throughout a distinguished career marked by his explosive batting, inventive shot-making, and outstanding fielding. Maxwell’s memorable unbeaten double-century during the 2023 World Cup remains a highlight of his ODI journey.

Maxwell cited the physical demands of the ODI format—matches lasting up to eight hours with quick turnarounds—as a key reason for stepping away.

He explained that the toll was beginning to affect his fielding, and he doubted his ability to compete effectively through to the 2027 World Cup.

“I didn’t want to just hold on for a couple of series and almost play for selfish reasons,” Maxwell said. He emphasized his respect for the team’s direction, adding that his retirement allows selectors to better plan for the future.

Australia’s selection chairman George Bailey praised Maxwell as one of the most dynamic players in ODI history, acknowledging his vital contributions to two World Cup victories. Bailey noted that Maxwell’s skill set remains well-suited for the shorter T20 format, where he can continue to add value.

“His natural talent, energy in the field, bowling skills, and longevity are remarkable,” Bailey said. “Most importantly, his passion and commitment to Australian cricket are unwavering. Fortunately, he still has much to offer in T20 cricket.”

Maxwell’s retirement marks the end of an era in Australian ODI cricket but signals his ongoing importance in the team’s T20 ambitions.
