Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva has captured her first Grand Slam title after winning the French Open women’s singles final in Paris on Saturday.

The 19-year-old eighth seed defeated Poland’s Maja Chwalinska in straight sets, sealing the match 6-3, 6-2 at Roland Garros to claim the championship.

Andreeva controlled the final with a steady performance from start to finish, denying Chwalinska’s bid to become the first qualifier in history to win the women’s title in Paris.

The victory marks a major milestone for Andreeva, who has been regarded as one of tennis’ most promising young players since breaking through on the professional circuit as a teenager.

With this win, she becomes the youngest French Open women’s champion since Monica Seles lifted her third straight title in 1992 at the age of 18.

Chwalinska, ranked 114th in the world, had enjoyed a strong run through qualifying and the main draw but was unable to match Andreeva’s consistency in the final.

The French Open will conclude on Sunday with the men’s singles final, where Germany’s Alexander Zverev is set to face Italy’s Flavio Cobolli.
