A Dhaka court today placed 15 leaders and activists of BNP and its student wing Jatiyatabadi Chatra Dal on two-day remand each in a case lodged over clash with police in capital's Nayapaltan area on October 26.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Asheq Imam passed the order as police produced 50 BNP men before the court yesterday and pleaded to place 15 of them on a seven-day remand. The law enforcing agency also had pleaded to keep 35 others behind the bars till the end of the probe in the case.
The court, however, adjourned the hearing till today as the proceedings were suspended in honour of eminent lawyer Abdul Baset Majumder, who died yesterday morning.
The 15 remanded accused are-Abu Sufian, Jihadul Haque Ronju, Jhalak Miah, Abu Hanna Talukder, Al Imran, Shahadat Hossain, Sajib, Habibur Rahman Habib, Atikur Rahman Apu, Hasan Ali, Mutasim Billah, Gazi Sultan Jewel, Rezaul Islam Prince, Shukkur and Abul Hossain Hawlader Ashiq.
BNP organized a peace rally on Tuesday in protest of recent communal violence across the country.
But the party activists turned violent when the law enforcers barred them from going outside the Nayapaltan area. BNP men attacked police from the rally, police said. As many as 50 BNP activists were arrested.
Police later filed the case against 97 BNP men.
