2nd phase of Ijtema begins

The second phase of the three-day long Bishwa Ijtema, which is regarded as the second-largest congregation of Muslim after the Hajj, started on the banks of the River Turag in Tongi.

The 56th edition of the Ijtema began with the Aam Bayan (sermons) after Fajr prayers with the participation of a large number of devotees, including the followers of Indian preacher Maulana Muhammad Saad Al Kandhalvi.

Health camps were set up for the devotees to provide them with treatment like the previous phases.

Maulana Saad will not attend this year's Ijtema. Maulana Mohammad Osman, an Islamic preacher from Pakistan, presented the sermons which Maulana Zia Bin Qasim translated into Bangla.

Ahead of the Jumma prayer, tens of thousands of pious Tabligh members have thronged Ijtema venue. Maulana Saad's son Yusuf bin Saad Kandhalvi reached at the Ijtema ground and would lead the Jumma prayer.

Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Commissioner Molla Nazrul Islam said that extra police would be deployed in and around the Ijtema venue. The second phase of three-day Bishwa Ijtema will conclude with Akheri Munajat on January 22 (final prayers).

After being postponed for two years due to Covid-19 outbreak, the three-day Bishwa Ijtema's first phase started this year and came to a close with Akheri Munajat on January 15.

Since 1967, Tabligh Jamaat has been organizing the Ijtema in Tongi. To accommodate a high number of guests, it split Ijtema into two phases in 2011.old age complication, a devotee from Barguna Mofizul Islam, 75, died.
