At least 50 people have sustained injuries and 300 establishments including houses were damaged as a nor’wester accompanied by hailstorm and gusty winds swept through three upazilas of Brahmanbaria district.
The storm started around 3:20 pm on Monday and lasted for ten minutes, said Nasirnagar Upazila officer, Avhijit Roy.
He said: “The storm damaged 300 houses, electric poles, while a number of trees were uprooted in Sarail, Nasirnagar and Bijoynagar upazilas of the district. Besides, 50 people were injured during the storm. Of them, one was undergoing treatment.”
A portion of the East Balikhola Primary School building collapsed during the storm, forcing the authorities concerned to shut down the school for an indefinite period, he added.
Power connection in the upazila remained suspended till Monday afternoon following the incident.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Akram Hossain said a vast tract of standing crops was damaged due to the storm coupled with hailstorm.
