Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman has dismissed speculation about a state of emergency in Bangladesh, urging patience and warning against misinformation.

He also praised army personnel for their dedication, professionalism, and resilience, emphasizing that rumors should not be a distraction, reports Dhaka Tribune.

General Waker made these comments on Monday during the “Officer’s Address” at Dhaka Cantonment.

Senior army officials from across the country attended in person, while those stationed outside Dhaka joined virtually.

Multiple sources present at the meeting confirmed his statements.

The speech came after a night of intense speculation, with rumors spreading about the possible imposition of martial law or a state of emergency in light of the country’s recent political developments.

According to sources at the meeting, the army chief addressed several key issues, including law and order, the spread of misinformation, and provocative rhetoric.

“The country and its people remain the army’s highest priority,” said General Waker, whose forces have been deployed with magistracy powers for over six months to assist the civil administration.

They have played a key role since Sheikh Hasina’s removal and the formation of the interim government under Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus.

General Waker-Uz-Zaman expressed his gratitude to the officers and soldiers, assuring them that their sacrifices would always be recognized.

He urged them to remain patient and not fall for provocations, warning that impulsive actions could serve the interests of those trying to create unrest.

“Do not react to provocation. We must stay focused on our duty to support the country‍‍`s stability. Instruct your soldiers to do the same. Work with wisdom. The nation expects a lot from us, and fulfilling those expectations is our sacred duty.”

General Waker also highlighted international recognition of the Bangladesh Army, mentioning that the UN secretary-general had praised its contributions to UN missions.

He thanked the 10th Infantry Division for successfully organizing a large-scale Iftar event with Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, which was attended by the UN secretary-general.

Additionally, he referenced his recent meeting with US Senator Gary Peters, who expressed satisfaction with the army’s efforts.

Reaffirming the army’s humanitarian role, he assured continued support for injured students from the July uprising, including free medical treatment and financial aid at all Combined Military Hospitals (CMHs).

Addressing criticisms directed at the army, he noted that some individuals were overstepping their limits.

“We will deal with it professionally. Do not mistreat anyone or resort to violence. I do not want anyone to say anything negative about my army,” he said.

With Eid-ul-Fitr approaching, he emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order and instructed officers to take decisive measures against any disruptions.

General Waker concluded his speech by underscoring the values of ethics, justice, and dedication to the people of Bangladesh.
