On the occasion of Eid, two groups of the Awami League's Kaunia branch in Rangpur got into a fight over slogan-making at a discussion gathering hosted by Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi. In this incident, one person died and at least ten people were injured.
Deceased Sona Mia (55) is the son of Abdul Khalek of Najidah Nayatari area of Haragach. He is said to be a local Awami League worker.
The clash took place on the ground of Imamganj School and College of Khansamarhat of Kaunia Upazila at around 8 pm yesterday.
Rangpur Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Ifte Khair Alam confirmed about the clash and the death of one person to TheReport.Live.
This Rangpur police officer also said, "Sona Mia's family is preparing for the case. However, no one was detained or arrested. The situation in the area is stable.”
According to local and Kaunia police sources, a discussion meeting was held by Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi at Imamganj School and College ground of Kaunia upazila yesterday afternoon. Arguments and scuffles took place between two groups of Awami League over slogan-making on the occasion of the minister's arrival. Then the police went and brought the situation under control. However, in that situation, the commerce minister left the venue without holding a meeting.
After the Minister's departure, two groups clashed in front of the college grounds at around 8 pm in the night. At one stage, Sona Mia died on the spot after being hit by a stick. According to party sources, deceased Sona Mia Kaunia is a follower of Upazila Awami League President and Upazila Chairman Anwarul Islam Maya.
