Bangladesh is observing the 10th anniversary of the Holey Artisan Bakery attack on Wednesday, remembering the 22 victims of the country‍‍`s deadliest terrorist assault.

Family members, friends and well-wishers of those killed are paying tribute through commemorative events and personal observances in Bangladesh and abroad.

On July 1, 2016, heavily armed militants stormed the Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka‍‍`s Gulshan diplomatic zone, taking hostages and carrying out an attack that shocked the nation and drew global condemnation.

The attack claimed the lives of 22 people, including nine Italians, seven Japanese nationals, one Indian, one Bangladeshi-born American and two Bangladeshis. Two police officers were also killed while responding to the attack.

The siege ended on July 2 after members of the Bangladesh Army‍‍`s 1st Para-Commando Battalion launched a rescue operation. Thirteen hostages, including three foreign nationals, were rescued alive, while the bodies of 20 victims were recovered from inside the restaurant.

During the operation, five militants and one restaurant staff member were killed, while another suspected militant was arrested.

A case was later filed with Gulshan Police Station, and police submitted charges against eight accused in July 2018.

The trial formally began later that year, and on November 27, 2019, a court sentenced seven militants to death for their involvement in the attack.

Authorities had earlier said 13 other militants linked to the attack were killed in separate security operations carried out after the incident.

The Holey Artisan attack remains one of the darkest chapters in Bangladesh‍‍`s history and marked a turning point in the country‍‍`s counterterrorism efforts.
