Police have arrested four men in connection with the recent attacks on homes, shops, and a temple belonging to the Hindu community in Sunamganj’s Doarabazar area.
The violence, which took place earlier this month, erupted after a Facebook post was accused of disrespecting Islam.
The arrested individuals are Alim Hossain (19), Sultan Ahmed Raju (20), Imran Hossain (31), and Shahjahan Hossain (20), according to a police statement issued on Saturday, December 14.
The trouble started on December 3 when Akash Das, a 20-year-old from Munglargao village, allegedly posted something offensive about Islam on his Facebook account.
Though the post was quickly deleted, screenshots spread throughout the local community, sparking anger and tension.
Upon learning of the situation, local police acted fast and took Akash Das into custody. However, an angry crowd gathered, trying to snatch him away from the police.
Fearing for his safety, officers transferred him to the main police station instead of keeping him at Doarabazar.
During the chaos, a mob vandalized Hindu homes, shops, and the local Loknath Temple.
Police said the situation was brought under control only after the Superintendent of Police, the Deputy Commissioner, and army personnel intervened.
Following an investigation, authorities identified the individuals responsible for the violence.
On December 14, a case was filed against 12 named suspects and around 150 to 170 unnamed individuals believed to be involved.
The police are continuing their investigation and are working to restore peace in the area.
