Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has decided in principle to form a greater coalition to launch movement for the one-off demand of holding national election under nonpartisan government.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the party’s standing committee on Saturday night with BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman in chair virtually.
Starting from 9pm in the night the meeting was carried out for about five hours, Prothomalo online reports quoting several members of BNP standing committee.
Seeking anonymity a BNP standing committee member said, efforts were underway to form a bigger coalition. But, it did not happen. But, the government is again plotting to hold another one-sided election by forming new Election Commission (EC) in own choice. When the new EC formulation law was passed the party realized that there is no much time. There is no alternative to launch movement with the one-off demand.
Earlier, BNP formed two coalitions ---20-party alliance and Jatiya Oikya Front.
Another BNP leader, requesting to be unnamed, said, whether or not the greater coalition would be formed keeping these two alliances together is yet to be decided.
However, the meeting discussed the issues elaborately. The formation of new platform will be made discussion all quarters, he said.
Meanwhile, BNP standing committee member Iqbal Hasan Mahmud said, “No decision has been taken during yesterday’s meeting. But, we have decided to form the alliance with them whoever takes to the street.
