At least hundred hand-made grenades and cocktail explosions have erupted in clashes between the supporters of two Union Parishad (UP) members over dominance in Kalkini upazila of Madaripur.
At least 24 people from both sides were injured in the clashes.
The clash took place on Saturday (December 18) morning in East Enayetnagar between members of the local Khans and Quazis.
Kalkini Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ishtiaq Ashraf Russell confirmed the matter to TheReport.live.
According to local sources, recently the supporters of Qazi in East Enayetnagar area amputated the left leg of Miraj Khan, known as a supporter of Khan group in the same area. Miraj Khan's brother Kalam Khan filed a case against 35 people including Apong Kazi at Kalkini police station.
In a fit of rage, the plaintiff's uncle hit legs of Liaquat Khan, son of Titai Khan of the same area, with a hammer. Later, the locals admitted him to the Upazila Health Complex in a critical condition. Later, when his condition deteriorated, he was taken to the National Orthopedic Hospital and Rehabilitation Institution (Pangu Hospital) in Dhaka.
Consequently, the two sides engaged in a bloody clash on Saturday.
Kalkini Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ishtiaq Ashraf Russell said, "Clashes and attacks between supporters of the two sides in East Enayetnagar erupted on Saturday. Additional police have been deployed in the area to control the situation." Police are working to arrest the accused in the case, he added.
Police is also aware of the frequent clashes between the Khans and Quazis in the area.
