DU BCL leaders caught red-handed while extorting from book fair visitors

Two Dhaka University Chhatra League leaders were handed over to police while they were attempting to extort money from a group of visitors who had traveled to Amar Ekushey Book Fair from Chandpur on Thursday evening.

The arrestees are Rajib Hossen Robin of Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haq hall and Mohaimenul Islam Emon of Master Da Surja Sen hall. Both of them are the vice presidents of their respective hall's Chhatra League unit.

These two Dhaka University students reportedly halted a group of book fair attendees by posing as police officers, according to a police source from Shahbag police station.

They checked their bodies and charged the visitors, alleging that they were selling drugs. When they did not discover any narcotics, they stole all of their money, totaling Tk 1500.

"The snatchers refunded Tk 600 and escaped on a motorcycle when the victims indicated they had no money to get back to Chandpur," a police source said.

"The victims began yelling. When they began to doubt those as would-be snatchers, the onlookers immediately seized them and turned them over to the police." the source added.

Asked about the matter, OC of Shahbagh Police station Nur Mohammad told that the duo snatchers were arrested red-handed and cops had seized a bike from them.

A complaint was filed with Shahbagh police station and subsequently law enforcers kept them in police custod.
