In a recent announcement, Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the Home Affairs Advisor, confirmed that steps are being taken to bring back Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh.
During a medal ceremony at the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) headquarters in Pilkhana on Monday, December 23, he revealed that a formal letter has already been sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The letter asks the Foreign Ministry to make the necessary arrangements and communicate with India about Sheikh Hasina`s return.
According to the advisor, this process will follow the prisoner extradition agreement between the two countries.
At the same event, he also shared that a commission has been set up to investigate the tragic BDR mutiny that occurred on February 25, 2009, in Pilkhana.
The mutiny resulted in the deaths of many army officers, and this commission will look into the details of the incident.
Addressing the ongoing issue of Rohingya refugees, Jahangir Alam assured that the government’s policy of stopping the illegal entry of Rohingyas remains firm.
"We are not allowing any Rohingyas to enter, except those who are severely ill and need help for humanitarian reasons," he stated.
He also clarified a previous statement made by the Foreign Affairs Advisor, who had mentioned that 60,000 Rohingyas had entered Bangladesh in the last two months.
Jahangir Alam explained this was a "slip of the tongue," and the actual number of Rohingyas who entered is over a span of one and a half to two years, not two months.
On a different note, the advisor commented on an incident in Cumilla, assuring that those responsible for harassing freedom fighters will be brought to justice. "We will ensure that anyone involved in harassing freedom fighters faces legal action," he added.
