The main accused in journalist Mohiuddin Sarker murder case has been killed in an alleged gunfight with a team of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab).
The deceased is Md Raju, 34.
Maj Mohammad Sakib Hossain, Company Commander of Rab-11 (Crime Prevention Company-2) in Cumilla confirmed the news.
He said: “Acting on information, a team of Rab went to Golabari area to conduct an anti-smuggling raid on Saturday night. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the smugglers fired shots. The Rab members also opened fire in self-defence, leaving one person injured.”
“The man was rushed to Cumilla Medical College Hospital where the physician declared him dead at 2 am on Sunday. A pistol and ammo were recovered from the spot,” he added.
Later, locals identified him as Raju, the prime accused in the journalist murder case.
Earlier on Wednesday, journalist Mohiuddin was shot dead in Haidrabad area adjacent to Shankuchail in Rajapur union of Burichang upazila in Cumilla.
He was a staff reporter of Burichang upazila’s local newspaper ‘Cumillar Dak’. He was vocal against narcotics use and trade on social media.
As of now, four people have been arrested in connection with the incident.
