Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked for International recognition of the National Genocide Day, March 25. She demanded this recognition in her welcome speech at the Awami League's member nomination board meeting at Ganabhaban on Saturday.
The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Awami League President Sheikh Hasina. This meeting was called to finalize the party candidate of Awami League for the Chittagong-8 seat by-election.
On the night of March 25, 1971, a brutal massacre was carried out on Bangladesh by the barbaric Pakistani army. About 3 million people were martyred in the war with Pakistan. After 46 years of independence, the 'Genocide Day' is being celebrated on March 25 nationally since 2018 with the decision of the National Parliament.
Although this is one of the largest genocides in history, it is still not recognized by the United Nations or any international institutional document. Although some initiatives were taken to gain international recognition, they were not followed up later.
In the welcome speech at the meeting of Awami League's Parliamentary Nomination Board at Ganabhaban on Saturday, the Government sought International recognition of Genocide Day.
