EC announces roadmap for 13th national parliament polls

The Election Commission (EC) has unveiled a comprehensive roadmap for the 13th National Parliament elections, prioritizing 24 critical activities to ensure a smooth electoral process. The announcement was made today by Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed.

According to the roadmap, the elections are scheduled to be held in the first half of February 2026, with the official schedule to be released in the first half of December 2025.

Key preparatory activities include finalizing parliamentary constituency boundaries, updating the voter list, registering political parties, and accrediting domestic observer organizations.

Other important tasks encompass dialogue with stakeholders, electoral law reforms, setting up polling centers, facilitating postal voting, approving media and observer guidelines, mobilizing election personnel, procuring election materials, training staff, implementing digital monitoring systems, ensuring transparent ballot handling, and publishing preliminary and final results.

The process for stakeholder dialogue is set to begin in the last week of September and is expected to continue for approximately one and a half months. The second-phase provisional voter list has already been published and will be finalized by 31 August. The final voter list will be released on 30 November, following the supplementary update on 31 October.

Electoral law amendments, including updates to the Representation of the People Order (RPO) and other related statutes, are expected to be submitted by 31 August. This also includes amendments to the Parliamentary Constituency Boundaries Act, Voter List Act, polling center guidelines, observer and journalist regulations, and other key election laws, which are currently under review by the Ministry of Law and expected to be completed by 30 September.

Political party registration will be finalized by mid-September, with initial registrations completed earlier in the month. Constituency boundaries will be finalized at the beginning of September, with gazette notification and GIS mapping completed by 30 September.

Preparations for postal voting, including software finalization, mobile app development, and tracking modules, are scheduled for October, while ballots for overseas voters will be dispatched in November. Voting arrangements for incarcerated individuals will be made two weeks prior to the election.

Law and order coordination meetings are scheduled in September, both before and after the official election schedule announcement. The chief advisor has confirmed that the 13th National Parliament election will take place before Ramadan in early February 2026. The Chief Election Commissioner also stated that the official election schedule will be announced approximately two months prior to the voting date, with the EC set to release it in early December.
