RAB steps up nationwide security for Language Martyrs’ Day observance

The Rapid Action Battalion has strengthened security across the country, including in the capital, ahead of the observance of the Great Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day on February 21.

RAB said the special deployment began on Wednesday and will continue until February 22 to ensure a peaceful and orderly commemoration.

Briefing reporters at the Central Shaheed Minar on the Dhaka University campus, RAB Director General AKM Shahidur Rahman said comprehensive measures have been put in place to prevent any untoward incidents during the programmes marking the historic day.

He said RAB is fully prepared to maintain law and order nationwide, with particular focus on the Central Shaheed Minar. Responding to questions, he added that there are no specific security threats linked to the observance.

Special arrangements have been made at the Central Shaheed Minar, where the President and the Prime Minister are scheduled to place wreaths in honour of the Language Movement martyrs. RAB members will work alongside other law enforcement agencies, setting up observation posts, watch towers and checkpoints in key areas.

The RAB chief said CCTV and IP cameras have been installed to monitor both the inner and outer perimeters of the Shaheed Minar area, with surveillance managed through dedicated control rooms. Bomb Disposal Units and Dog Squads will also conduct security sweeps, while RAB’s Special Force will remain on standby around the clock.

He added that security has been tightened at Shaheed Minars in metropolitan areas, divisional cities, districts and upazilas where Amar Ekushey programmes, including wreath-laying, discussions and cultural events, are planned.

According to RAB, intelligence surveillance has been increased, including the deployment of plainclothes personnel, to prevent any attempt by banned groups to create unrest. All RAB battalions will coordinate closely with local administration and other agencies, with the control room at RAB Headquarters overseeing operations nationwide.

The RAB director general urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement to ensure a calm and dignified observance. He asked people to report any suspicious activity immediately to nearby patrols or RAB commanders.

He reiterated that RAB is committed to enforcing all law and order directives to ensure the historic day is observed peacefully across the country.
