Search committee must prioritise transparency, impartiality: TIB

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has urged the search committee to form new Election Commission (EC) to prioritise transparency and impartiality in line with the law.

The Bangladesh wing of the global anti-graft body made the urge in a press release issued soon after the gazette notification of the search committee was published on Saturday.

There is no opportunity to ignore the constitutional spirit and expectation of people to hold a neutral, acceptable and credible election commission, TIB said.

TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman said, “With due respect we beg that, the search committee shall consider the professional and personal honesty, impartiality, righteousness, objectivity, courage and acceptability to pick the names to form new election commission. At the same time, the search committee must ensure the selected persons don’t have any moral deviation, corruption and loan defaulting.”

“We want to believe, the commission, consisted of four government high ups and two civil society members will discharge their duties upholding the honour to their posts and position,” Iftekharuzzaman furthered.
