The army might be deployed on December 29 ahead of the upcoming 12th National Assembly elections. The Election Commission (EC) informed this in a meeting with the Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces regarding the deployment of the army.
After the meeting on Monday, the Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Lt. General Walker-uz-Zaman said this in the media center of EC in Agargaon.
The PSO said that the armed forces will enter the field on December 29 if the President gives permission. They (Election Commission) want the army to be deployed. There has been a discussion on how to deploy them. They will make recommendations to the President. If the President decides, the army must be deployed.
General Wakerr-uz-Zaman also said that the army may be deployed for 13 days from December 29 to January 10 around the 12th National Assembly elections.
He also said that more than 35,000 army personnel were deployed in the 11th National Assembly elections. If more forces are needed this time, it will be deployed that way.. Last time it was deployed in 388 upazilas.
Before this, EC Secretary Md. Jahangir Alam said that the Election Commission has discussed with the Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces, the Public Security Department and the senior secretaries of the Defense Ministry. In this regard, there was a discussion about how the armed forces can help in the elections.
