Cybersecurity specialists are advising internet users to take simple but important steps to strengthen their online security, warning that neglected accounts and outdated software can create easy opportunities for cybercriminals.

Experts say one of the most overlooked risks is inactive online accounts.

Old email addresses, social media profiles and unused services can become targets for hackers if they remain accessible but unmonitored.

“Every dormant account is an open door. Scammers actively target abandoned logins because no one’s watching,” cybersecurity expert Sherwood said.

Security professionals also recommend regularly updating smartphones, computers and apps.

Installing the latest software versions and security patches can help protect devices from newly discovered vulnerabilities while improving overall performance.

Another key recommendation involves reviewing privacy settings on social media platforms.

Experts advise users to check what personal information is publicly visible and assess which applications and services have access to their accounts.

According to cybersecurity professionals, reducing the amount of personal information available online can lower the chances of becoming a victim of phishing scams, identity theft and other cyberattacks.

Chad Thunberg, chief information security officer at a cybersecurity company, said limiting public access to personal details can significantly reduce security risks.

Experts also encourage users to review third-party access permissions linked to their online accounts. Many websites and apps allow sign-ins through services such as Google, Apple and Facebook, often granting long-term access that users may forget about over time.

Removing unnecessary third-party connections can improve account security and help users maintain greater control over their personal data.

As cyber threats continue to evolve, security experts say routine checks of online accounts, privacy settings and device updates remain among the most effective ways to stay protected.
