Uttara Model Town project not accomplished in 22 years

Uttara Model Town project was estimated to conclude in three years. Despite the project being extended thrice earlier Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) expanded the deadline once again.

Concerned officials say 92 percent of the project has been implemented. One more year will be required to finish the remainder.

The information was disclosed recently during a meeting of the Project Steering Committee (PSC). The meeting reviewed the barriers in implementing the project with housing and public works secretary Md. Shahid Ullah Khandaker in the chair.

Complicacy with lake

The meeting sought a reason why the project is not completed yet despite extension multiple times.

Project director said, there is a complication with Dhaka Wasa regarding the boundary of the project to dig out lake 1 and 4. Besides, the project is not possible to finish within the stipulated time unless the authorised expenditure and internal expenditure are not adjusted.

Feud of Wasa and city corporation

The PSC meeting asked to settle the feud between Dhaka Wasa and Dhaka North City Corporation. The meeting also decided to adjust expenditures and send a proposal to the ministry to extend the project further.

Project taken in 1999

The project involved taka 2 thousand 44 crore 81 lakh in 1999 and was estimated to conclude within June 2002. Later the project was revised twice. The project expenditure was reset at taka 2 thousand 316 crore 38 lakh 4 thousand was extended till June 2018 after 2nd revision. But the project remained incomplete at the end of the deadline. The project was rescheduled in June this year to conclude but same outcome this time too. So, once again the time-limits expanded and fixed upto June 2022.
