A child was allegedly beaten and three women were humiliated -- two of them having their hair forcibly cut -- after the child reportedly touched an item displayed outside a shop in Akhaura upazila of Brahmanbaria last night.

The incident took place in front of “Chandpur Aluminium Store”, located beneath the NCC Bank building at Sarak Bazar, reports The Daily Star.

According to eyewitnesses, the child, who was accompanied by three women, touched a crockeries item displayed outside the store. Suman Das, owner of SM Electric Corner, allegedly accused the child of theft and began beating him.

Md Rabbi, owner of a neighbouring shop, reportedly joined in and detained the three women. He then removed their head coverings and forcibly cut their hair in public, witnesses claimed.

The two men also reportedly beat the child and two of the women with plastic pipes and rods, injuring them.

Bystanders gathered at the scene and recorded videos, which later went viral on Facebook, sparking outrage in the community.

Locals informed the nearby police station, prompting authorities to launch an investigation. Many residents staged a protest in front of Akhaura Police Station today, demanding the immediate arrest and punishment of those responsible for the inhumane act.

Police today detained Suman Das in this regard, said Akhaura Police Station‍‍`s Officer-in-Charge Md Chomiuddin.

"No one involved in this crime will be spared. We are reviewing video footage and witness testimonies to take appropriate legal steps," the OC said, adding that a case will be filed in this regard.
