Chicken prices have increased in Dhaka’s kitchen markets over the past few days, while vegetable prices have remained stable. Rice prices, which saw a slight increase two to three weeks ago, have also remained unchanged at the higher level. This information was gathered on Friday after visiting several kitchen markets in the capital and speaking with buyers and sellers.

Market observations show that broiler and Sonali chicken prices have risen by Tk 10 to Tk 20 per kilogram within a week. Broiler chicken is currently selling at Tk 170 to Tk 190 per kg, compared to Tk 160 to Tk 170 last week. Sonali chicken is being sold at Tk 320 to Tk 340 per kg.

Two to three weeks ago, prices of Miniket, Nazirshail, and BR-28 rice increased by Tk 2 to Tk 4 per kg. Although prices have not increased further, they remain at the elevated level. Miniket rice is currently selling at Tk 68 to Tk 72 per kg, while Nazirshail is priced at Tk 75 to Tk 85 per kg depending on quality. BR-28 or medium rice is selling at Tk 58 to Tk 62 per kg.

Retail rice traders say that although supply from mills remains stable, there is no indication of a price decrease. As a result, retail prices remain unchanged at the higher level.

While the chicken and rice markets show some price pressure, vegetable prices remain stable. Due to sufficient supply of both winter and summer vegetables, most items remain affordable for consumers, with prices largely ranging between Tk 40 and Tk 60 per kg.

Currently, eggplant is selling at Tk 70 to Tk 80 per kg, bitter gourd at Tk 50, okra at Tk 40, teasel gourd at Tk 50 to Tk 60, papaya at Tk 40, sponge gourd at Tk 50, cucumber at Tk 60, ridge gourd at Tk 50, and pointed gourd at Tk 40. Potatoes are priced at Tk 25 per kg, while onions sell for Tk 40 to Tk 45 per kg. Each bottle gourd is being sold at around Tk 50.

In the fish market, local fish prices have remained relatively stable, though hilsa continues to remain expensive. Farmed koi fish is selling at Tk 180 per kg, katla at Tk 400, pabda at Tk 400, and tengra at Tk 700 per kg.

Hilsa weighing around one kilogram is currently selling at Tk 2,800 per kg, while larger hilsa weighing around 1.5 kg is priced at Tk 3,500 per kg.
