The government has relaxed its recently introduced power-saving restrictions, allowing shopping malls, markets and retail outlets across Bangladesh to remain open until 9 pm starting June 12.
The Power Division announced the decision in a notification issued on Thursday, setting new business hours from 11 am to 9 pm for commercial establishments covered by the directive.
The move comes less than two weeks after authorities shortened operating hours as part of efforts to reduce electricity consumption during periods of increased demand. Under the earlier measure, which took effect on June 1, shopping centres and markets were required to close by 7pm.
According to the revised order, the extended schedule will also apply to fairs, trade exhibitions and cultural programmes being held nationwide.
However, essential services such as hospitals, pharmacies and restaurants will continue to operate outside the scope of the restrictions.
The Power Division has also instructed authorities to ensure that illuminated billboards and outdoor advertising displays are switched off by 9 pm.
Organisers of fairs and cultural events have likewise been directed to conclude activities by the same time.
The government introduced the earlier restrictions as part of a broader strategy to manage electricity use efficiently and maintain a stable power supply across the country.
Officials said the latest adjustment reflects the current power situation and is intended to provide greater flexibility for businesses while continuing efforts to conserve energy.
