The price of green chilies has dropped sharply after imports from India began through Benapole Land Port, following government approval aimed at easing supply shortages caused by heavy rainfall.
A shipment of 9.2 tonnes of green chilies arrived in Bangladesh on an Indian truck through Benapole Land Port on Monday night. As a result, retail prices fell by nearly half on Tuesday, with green chilies now selling for Tk180–200 per kilogram, down from Tk300–400 per kilogram.
Consumers welcomed the price drop, expressing relief after a sharp surge in recent days.
Traders said heavy rainfall had reduced production and disrupted supplies, driving up prices in vegetable markets in Benapole, Navaran, Sharsha and surrounding areas. They said the arrival of imported Indian chilies has already started to stabilize the market.
Md. Ziaur Rahman, general secretary of the Benapole-Jashore Importers and Exporters Association, said the government moved quickly to allow imports after prices soared. As imports increase, market prices are expected to decline further, benefiting both consumers and traders.
He added that the import cost of green chilies stands at Tk135 per kilogram.
Shamim Hossain, traffic director at Benapole Land Port, said the truck carrying the chilies arrived on Monday night and the consignment was cleared promptly after customs formalities were completed.
