Hilsa to be exported to India for Durga Puja at Tk 1,475 per Kg

Bangladesh will export 1,200 tons of hilsa to India this year on the occasion of Durga Puja, according to an order issued by the Ministry of Commerce on Monday.

The decision allows conditional exports, with West Bengal being the key destination due to high consumer demand for Bangladeshi hilsa.

The ministry stated that interested exporters must apply in hard copy on September 11 during office hours.

Applications must include updated trade licenses, Export Registration Certificates (ERC), income tax and VAT certificates, sales contracts, and licenses from the Department of Fisheries.

The government has fixed the minimum export price at Tk 1,475 per kilogram (equivalent to $12.50). Exporters who have already applied without the official call will also need to resubmit applications.

Last year, the government initially approved 3,000 tons of hilsa exports to India but later reduced it to 2,420 tons, granting permission to 49 companies. This year’s quota is half of that amount.

Conditions include a strict ban on exporting more than the approved quota, transferring permits, or subcontracting exports. The government also reserves the right to suspend exports at any time.
