The instability in the green chili market has continued unabated. Over the past week, the price of green chilies has increased by nearly Tk 80 per kilogram, with the vegetable now selling at Tk 220–240 per kg in markets across the capital. During the same period, the prices of several vegetables have risen by up to Tk 10 per kg. Egg prices have also increased by Tk 5 per dozen. Fish and meat prices remain high, with no significant relief for consumers.
Retailers said continuous rainfall has damaged chili and vegetable cultivation in various parts of the country. Waterlogging in fields has destroyed many plants, while excessive heat has also affected chili plants by damaging their leaves. As a result, farmers have been unable to supply chilies and vegetables according to market demand, pushing up prices in the capital’s markets. These details emerged from visits to Tejkunipara, Agargaon, and Karwan Bazar on Wednesday, where traders were interviewed.
According to traders, green chilies were selling at Tk 80–100 per kg two weeks ago, depending on quality. The price rose to Tk 120–160 per kg last week and climbed further to Tk 220–240 per kg on Wednesday. This means the price has increased by as much as Tk 140 per kg within two weeks.
Meanwhile, most vegetables are currently selling at Tk 70–80 per kg, with some varieties exceeding Tk 100. Radish, snake gourd, ridge gourd, and sponge gourd, which were selling at Tk 70–80 per kg last week, are now available at higher prices. Bitter gourd, eggplant, and yardlong beans have also become more expensive, rising to Tk 100–120 per kg.
However, consumers have seen some relief in the prices of cucumbers and tomatoes. Tomatoes are currently selling at Tk 130–140 per kg, while cucumbers are priced at Tk 80–100 per kg. Last week, cucumbers were selling at Tk 150–160 per kg.
Among vegetables, pointed gourd, okra, and papaya remain relatively affordable. Pointed gourd and okra are currently selling at Tk 60–70 per kg. Last week, pointed gourd was priced at Tk 40 per kg, while okra was Tk 60 per kg.
There has been no major change in the egg and poultry markets. Farm-produced white eggs are selling at Tk 115–120 per dozen, while brown eggs are priced at Tk 125–135 per dozen, similar to last week. Broiler chicken is selling at Tk 170–185 per kg, while Sonali chicken is priced at Tk 330–340 per kg.
There has also been no significant change in the prices of grocery items compared with last week.
