Political identity no longer a factor in govt job recruitment

The Bangladesh government has abolished the practice of seeking political identity through intelligence agencies during public service recruitment and promotion.

The move follows a recommendation by the Public Administration Reform Commission.

A meeting chaired by Principal Secretary M. Siraj Uddin Mia finalized the decision. The Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Public Administration, and Ministry of Home Affairs have been tasked with implementing it.

For decades, police and intelligence reports on political identity have led to qualified candidates being denied jobs or promotions. The reform aims to ensure fairness.

The commission also proposed that employees at the top of their pay scale, if not penalized, be eligible for the next scale after two years. The Finance Division will review and report by July 31.

Additional reforms include a 5% lateral recruitment provision, new hygienic toilet facilities at petrol pumps by July 20, dynamic government websites by December, and regular public hearings to address citizen complaints.
