The body of a student from Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet) was found hanging on Friday around 11 PM in a room located on the ninth floor of the Ebela dormitory in Rajshahi city.

The deceased, Mehdi Hasan Muhib, was enrolled in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning (URP), class of 2018-19, and hailed from Rangpur.

According to Ruet student Rafi Al Hasan, “Muhib Bhai and I attended the same school back in our hometown. He was older than me and an active member of our district association. He had a lively personality, so this tragic event completely takes us aback. I was informed of the incident by a friend and hurried to the location, where I discovered his hanging body. Teachers, students, police, and forensic officials were also present.”

Mehedi Masud, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Boalia Model Police Station, verified the occurrence, stating, “This appears to be a suicide; however, the precise cause remains unknown. We have taken the body and transported it to Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) Hospital‍‍`s morgue. The family has been notified, and legal procedures will proceed based on their wishes before the body being released.”

Robiul Islam Sarkar, the student adviser at Ruet, stated that “Mehdi was alone in a two-person room, as his roommate was not around. Other students in the dormitory forced the door open and discovered him hanging. They contacted the police, who subsequently retrieved the body.”

He added, “Mehdi’s mother had been attempting to contact him by phone since noon on Friday but was unsuccessful. By 11 PM, she contacted another student in the dorm, requesting him to check on Mehdi. When they arrived at his room, they found the door locked from the inside. After breaking it down, they found his body hanging.”

The student adviser noted that Mehdi’s classmates had graduated but could not do so because he failed a course.

This situation led to considerable depression for him, and he was receiving treatment from a psychiatrist.

It is believed that his mental health struggles may have contributed to his decision to end his life.

Concern over the increasing number of suicides among Ruet students was expressed by the student adviser, who mentioned, “This is a critical situation. Following previous occurrences, we recruited a professor from the Department of Psychology at Rajshahi University on a contractual basis. He visits Ruet three times a week to offer counseling to students facing mental health challenges.”
