Rizwana Hasan Calls for Global Unity on Sustainable Plastics and Zero-Carbon Future at Korea Summit

Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser of Bangladesh, has called for a stronger global commitment to sustainable plastic use and enhanced international cooperation to achieve a carbon-neutral future.

Speaking at the High-Level Ministerial Roundtable for Action Towards a Circular Economy, held in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, Republic of Korea, on Thursday, Rizwana underscored the urgency of transitioning to a zero-carbon development pathway. The roundtable was a key event marking World Environment Day 2025.

Highlighting Bangladesh’s dedication to environmental sustainability, she reaffirmed the country’s readiness to collaborate with international partners in advancing initiatives for effective plastic and waste management as well as forest conservation. She also assured Bangladesh’s continued engagement in related projects to ensure their long-term impact and sustainability.

On the sidelines of the conference, Rizwana held bilateral meetings with the Governor of Jeju Province and the Vice Minister of Environment of South Korea. The discussions explored opportunities for deeper cooperation in waste management, forest restoration, and wildlife conservation.

The Korean side expressed strong interest in establishing long-term partnerships with Bangladesh to promote a safer, greener planet for future generations.

During her official visit to South Korea from June 3 to 6, 2025, Rizwana also attended the General Assembly of the Green Transition Initiative (GTI) and participated in a Seminar on Plastic Policy and Industry.

She was accompanied by Toufiq Islam Shatil, Ambassador of Bangladesh to South Korea, and Mirza Shawkat Ali, Director of the Department of Environment.
