Six rivers flow above danger levels at 10 points

Heavy rainfall in upstream areas has caused water levels in six rivers across Bangladesh to rise above danger levels at 10 monitoring points.

In the last 24 hours, the highest rainfall in the upstream region was recorded in Cherrapunji, Meghalaya, India, with 224 millimetres of rain. During the same period, the highest rainfall inside Bangladesh was recorded in Chattogram, where 298.5 millimetres of rain was recorded.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre of the Bangladesh Water Development Board reported the information on Thursday morning.

According to the centre’s 9:00am update, water levels in six rivers were flowing above the danger mark at 10 points. Among them, the water level of the Sangu River was 142 centimetres above the danger level at the Bandarban point and 14 centimetres above the danger level at the Dohazari point in Chattogram.

The water level of the Matamuhuri River was flowing 154 centimetres above the danger mark at the Lama point and 49 centimetres above at the Chiringa point in Cox’s Bazar.

Meanwhile, the Kushiyara River was flowing 11 centimetres above the danger level at the Markuli point in Sunamganj. The Manu River was flowing 55 centimetres above the danger mark at both the Manu Railway Bridge point and the Moulvibazar point.

The Dhalai River was flowing 33 centimetres above the danger level at the Kamalganj point, while the water level of the Khowai River was 220 centimetres above the danger mark at the Balla point and 115 centimetres above at the Habiganj point.

According to the Water Development Board, water levels are rising at 93 monitoring points across the country’s floodplain rivers. Water levels have decreased at 31 points, while there has been no change at three points.

Meanwhile, water levels in three rivers are close to the danger mark. The Teesta River is nearing the warning level at the Dalia point in Nilphamari, Kaunia in Lalmonirhat, and Tarapur in Gaibandha. The Kushiyara River is also close to the warning level at Fenchuganj in Sylhet and Sherpur in Moulvibazar, while the Someshwari River is nearing the warning level at Kalmakanda in Netrokona and Lorergarh in Sunamganj.
