A Bangladesh Railway official claimed that the container train that collided with a passenger train in Bhairab on Monday had disregarded a signal, resulted in disastrous rail accident in recent past that left at least 15 people dead and numerous others injured.
Nazmul Islam, acting general manager (east) of Bangladesh Railway, informed the media of this initial discovery.
He said, the railway officials were engaged in rescue efforts, and that was why he could not share further details.
Another railway officer reported that they had heard that the passenger train, the Egarosindhur Express, arrived from Kishoreganj and halted at the Bhairab Railway Station to change directions.
Around 3:30 p.m., the Chattogram-bound freight train smashed into the last three carriages of the Egarosindhur Express as it was leaving the station to transfer to the Dhaka-bound line.
