Ex-minister Latif Siddiqui arrested over Shapla Chattar crackdown case

The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested former textiles and jute minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui in a crimes against humanity case over the May 5, 2013, Shapla Chattar crackdown in Dhaka.

DB Additional Commissioner Shafiqul Islam confirmed the arrest.

Latif Siddiqui was arrested from his Gulshan residence in the capital at around 6:00pm on Wednesday. He was later taken to the DB office for questioning.

According to DB sources, he was arrested based on an arrest warrant issued in connection with the crimes against humanity case. Further legal proceedings are underway.

Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal Mohammad Aminul Islam said Latif Siddiqui will be produced before the tribunal tomorrow.
