In the Rayerbagh neighborhood of Jatrabari, a pickup van plowed over an autorickshaw driver and a pedestrian, killing both of them on Friday.
According to the police, the incident took place in the morning about 6am under the Rayerbagh footover bridge and resulted in three additional injuries. Among those hurt were two police officers.
Akbar Hossain, a 40-year-old autorickshaw driver, and Md Hasan, a 37-year-old, were identified as the deceased.
According to Jatrabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mafizul Alam, Akbar, a few pedestrians, and police officers were standing at the side of the road when the van plowed into them in the morning.
As they arrived at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, the medical staff pronounced Akbar dead. Hasan passed away later while receiving medical attention, Mafizul added.
According to the police official, the police officers who were on duty at the time of the accident and got injured were admitted to Rajarbagh Police Line Hospital but were not in any danger.
Following the event, police apprehended the van driver and his assistant and impounded the vehicle.
