Tensions flared up late Sunday night (October 12) as students from Dhaka University (DU) and Dhaka College clashed over setting up a makeshift shop near the Nilkhet and New Market areas of the capital.
The incident led to chasing and counter-chasing, with both sides throwing bricks and stones, turning the area into a battleground.
Leaders of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), including Vice President Sadiq Kayem, rushed to the scene and attempted to calm the situation.
Meanwhile, a large number of police personnel were deployed in the Nilkhet and New Market areas to bring the situation under control.
Speaking to the media, Mohammad Jahangir, Assistant Commissioner of the New Market Zone under Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said the clash erupted after a dispute over setting up a roadside shop in front of Shahnewaz Hall of Dhaka University.
“A scuffle broke out between the students of Dhaka University and Dhaka College. Law enforcement officials later intervened and dispersed both groups,” he said.
The police official added that the incident is being investigated to determine what actually happened. “Legal action will be taken if necessary,” he stated, noting that no casualties were immediately reported.
