The death toll from the devastating fire in Rupnagar’s Shialbari area of Mirpur has risen to 16, authorities confirmed late Tuesday night.
According to officials from the Fire Service and Civil Defence, all 16 bodies were recovered from the scene and taken to the morgue of Dhaka Medical College (DMCH) Hospital in the presence of local police.
Md. Enamul Haque, Zone Commander of Fire Service Dhaka Central-1, said, “A total of 16 bodies have been recovered from the fire incident in Mirpur’s Rupnagar area. Our senior officials and local police are now handling the next procedures.”
Inspector Md. Faruk, in charge of the DMCH police outpost, confirmed that the victims were all severely burned, making visual identification impossible. “Initial observations suggest nine of the victims are male and seven are female. DNA tests will be conducted before handing over the bodies to their families,” he said.
Meanwhile, heartbroken relatives gathered outside the hospital morgue, clutching photographs of their missing loved ones and waiting desperately for identification results.
Firefighters and police are continuing their investigation into the cause of the deadly blaze.
