Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested 152 people during a special drive against extortion and crime across the capital over the past 48 hours.

Acting DMP Commissioner Md Sarwar said the operation began on May 1 and targeted extortionists, drug dealers, armed groups and online gambling networks.

He said 58 listed extortionists and 94 of their associates were detained based on intelligence information.

Police also recovered a large amount of drugs during the drive, including cannabis and Yaba tablets, and arrested several traffickers.

Officials said operations are now focusing more on major drug networks instead of small users, with efforts underway to identify and arrest key organisers.

Sarwar said police are using block raids, checkpoints, CCTV monitoring and cyber tracking to control crime and prevent suspects from escaping.

He added that mobile courts are taking action against minor offenders, while serious cases are being sent to court.

The police also said action is ongoing against illegal weapons, online gambling and digital fraud.

Authorities have set up new police camps in key areas and plan to expand them to improve security across the city.
