The Bomb Disposal Unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has found no hazardous substance in the hospital ward where six newborns died at Ad-Din Medical College Hospital, officials said after an inspection on Wednesday.

A five-member team from the police bomb disposal unit visited the ward in the afternoon and carried out an examination that lasted about an hour. Investigators said they did not detect any harmful material inside the room.

One member of the inspection team, speaking anonymously, said a mild odour was present in the ward but added that such a smell could occur if an air conditioner remains switched off for a period of time.

Earlier in the day, members of the Crime Scene Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department also inspected the hospital. Personnel from Rapid Action Battalion,

Detective Branch police and several intelligence agencies later visited the site as part of the ongoing investigation.

Later, Mosleh Uddin Ahmed visited the hospital and briefed reporters on preliminary findings gathered so far.

According to the DMP commissioner, 11 mothers and six newborns were staying in the post-operative ward at the time of the incident.

He said one of the mothers had reportedly requested that the air conditioner be turned off because she was feeling cold. Following the request, a nurse allegedly kept the AC switched off for nearly an hour.

Police said the room later became warm, prompting patients to ask for the air conditioner to be turned back on.

Shortly afterwards, two of the newborns reportedly became ill, followed by the remaining four babies. All six later died while receiving treatment, according to the commissioner.
