Haji Salim released in bail over graft case

Awami League lawmaker of Dhaka-7 Constituency Haji Mohammad Salim, who was punished for 10 years in prison over a graft case of acquiring illegal wealth, was released on bail after almost eight months of imprisonment.

He was released around 2pm on Tuesday, confirmed Md Selim, Deputy Jailer of Dhaka Central Jail.

Earlier around 1pm, a team led by Deputy Jailer Selim entered the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMU) with Haji Selim’s bail papers and handed him to the hospital authorities. Police security guards were withdrawn at that time.

Brig Gen Dr Md Rezaur Rahman informed the media that Haji Selim left the hospital shortly after being released on bail.

On December 6 last year, a five-member Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, gave him bail after hearing his leave-to-appeal petition challenging a High Court (HC) verdict that upheld his 10-year jail sentence in the case. He was also given permission to appeal against HC verdict.

Senior lawyer Syed Ahmed Raza was Salim's lawyer while another senior advocate Khurshid Alam Khan was from Anti-Corruption Commission’s side.
