A man has died after reportedly being electrocuted in stagnant rainwater on a street in Dhaka’s Bangshal area, according to police.

The incident occurred around 9:00 am Monday at Nazirabazar intersection. The victim, a 30-year-old bakery employee, was riding his bicycle when he fell into the flooded water, police said.

Bangshal Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Rafiqul Islam stated that locals rescued the man and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors pronounced him dead around 9:45 am.

He added that it could not immediately be confirmed whether a snapped electric wire or another source caused the electrocution.

Inspector Md Faruk of the DMCH police camp said, citing bystanders, that the man was cycling along Kazi Alauddin Road in heavy rain when he slipped into the waterlogged street. Locals pulled him out with bamboo sticks and rushed him to the hospital.

Witnesses reported an electricity pole near the location, but authorities have yet to determine how the man came into contact with electricity.

The body has been sent to the DMCH morgue for post-mortem examination, police confirmed.
