Students of Government Titumir College staged an hour-long road blockade on Monday afternoon in front of their campus, disrupting traffic in Dhaka’s Mohakhali area.
They were protesting to retain the college’s “independent structure” amid ongoing discussions over forming a separate university for the seven colleges affiliated with Dhaka University.
Around 12:30 p.m., more than 50 students occupied the road in front of the college, halting traffic from Mohakhali’s Amtali to Gulshan and creating a major traffic jam.
AKM Moinuddin, Inspector (Operations) of Banani Police Station, said, “We are speaking with the students and requesting them to clear the road.”
Initially, the students refused to leave but withdrew after about an hour. One protesting student warned that they would announce tougher programs if their demands were not met.
The Titumir College students have long opposed the government’s move to establish a separate university for the seven Dhaka University-affiliated colleges. Although that demand has not been fulfilled, they are now pressing for their own independent framework to be preserved.
