Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Monday criticised the police response to a protest held outside the headquarters of Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC, alleging that several demonstrators were injured during the incident.
In a statement, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar claimed that police used force against customers who gathered under the banner of the “Islami Bank Customers’ Forum” in Motijheel.
According to the party, the protesters had assembled to demand the resignation of the bank’s newly appointed chairman and to raise concerns about the protection of depositors’ interests.
Porwar said customers had been staging a sit-in programme since the morning and described the gathering as peaceful. He alleged that police moved against the demonstrators around 9:30 am, using batons, tear gas and water cannons.
He further claimed that gunfire was later used, leaving several depositors injured.
The Jamaat leader expressed concern over the reported injuries and called the police action unjustified.
He said citizens have the right to voice concerns about their savings and seek accountability from financial institutions.
Referring to past controversies in the banking sector, Porwar said many customers remain worried about the future of the bank and have raised objections to the appointment of the new chairman.
He alleged that some depositors believe the appointment could affect confidence in the institution.
He also argued that banks depend on public deposits and should remain accountable to their customers. Suppressing customer concerns through force, he said, was unacceptable.
Porwar called for an investigation into the incident and urged the authorities to identify those responsible for the alleged attack on protesters.
He also demanded a review of the chairman’s appointment and called on relevant authorities to take steps aimed at restoring confidence among depositors and ensuring stability in the banking sector.
