Three women from the indigenous Mro community, including two from the same family, were electrocuted in the Ranglai Headman Para of Chimbuk area in Bandarban on Monday morning (14 July). The incident occurred near the 13-mile point on the Bandarban-Chimbuk road.
The deceased have been identified as Tumle Mro (17), daughter of Rengthen Mro; Urkan Mro (71), wife of Parao Mro; and Rowleng Mro (35), wife of Menrao Mro.
According to police and local sources, a sudden explosion of an electrical transformer during rainfall led to the tragic incident.
The three women came in contact with a live wire and died on the spot. While locals rushed one of the victims to Bandarban Sadar Hospital, the other two bodies remained at the scene.
Rangrao Mro, president of the 12-mile market committee on Chimbuk Road, said, “The transformer exploded with a loud bang, and the victims were electrocuted by the live wires.”
Bandarban Superintendent of Police Md Shahidullah Kawser confirmed the deaths and said police have been dispatched to recover the bodies. He added that legal action will be taken following further investigation.
