35% pvt hospitals running without registration: icddr,b

Only 6 percent of private clinics and hospitals in the country have license. 35 percent of such health facilities are providing services without any registration, even they did not apply for registration. The remainders 59 percent are yet to renew their registration or just applied for registration.

The findings on private clinics and hospitals came up in a study conducted by the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b). The research was conducted in 2019-20 and was published on Tuesday coinciding with the ongoing drive of the health department against illegal private hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centres.

United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded the research.

The number of private health facilities increased rapidly during the 80s in Bangladesh. At present, about 80 percent of hospitals in the country are in the private sector. Despite a significant rise of the number of hospitals, there are huge gaps in the management process, the study finds.

During the study, the researchers collected data from 1 thousand 117 health service providers under 12 city corporations and 10 districts along with interviews of 31 personalities involved in private health services.
