At least four people were killed in a reported gunfight between two rival groups in Khagrachhari’s Dighinala upazila on Friday night, police said. The incident took place around 8:00 PM in the Jora Sindhu Karbaripara area.

According to police and local sources, the clash occurred between members of the Parbatya Chattogram Jana Samhati Samiti (JSS) and the United People‍‍`s Democratic Front (UPDF). The two groups reportedly came face-to-face in the area and exchanged gunfire.

Police claim that the deceased were members of the armed wing of the UPDF, known as the “People’s Liberation Army” or “Gonmukti Fouj.” However, their identities have not been confirmed.

Speaking to the reporters on Saturday afternoon, Dighinala Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Jakaria said the incident involved the main faction of the JSS and the UPDF. “Four members of the UPDF were killed in the exchange. The two sides remain in a standoff,” he added.

However, the UPDF has denied any involvement. In a press release issued on Saturday, UPDF leader Angya Marma dismissed the reports as “false and baseless.” He claimed that the UPDF has no armed wing named “People’s Liberation Army” and described the term as “imaginary and absurd.”

Angya Marma also alleged that a vested interest group was spreading misinformation to divert public attention from an ongoing protest over the recent gang-rape of a Tripura teenage girl in the neighboring area of Bhaibonchhara.

“There has been no such incident involving our party. This is a smear campaign,” he told the media.
