7 sentenced to death over gang rape of housewife in Jamalpur

A court in Bakshiganj upazila of Jamalpur has sentenced seven accused to death and acquitted one in a case involving the gang rape of a housewife. Each convict has also been fined Tk 100,000.

Jamalpur’s Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 has sentenced seven accused to death and acquitted one in a case of gang rape of a housewife at night in Bakshiganj upazila. Each of them has also been fined Tk 100,000.

The verdict was delivered on Monday (July 6) at 3:00 PM by Judge Muhammad Abdul Rahim of Jamalpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1.

The death-row convicts are Md. Rashedur Rahman alias Pappu (30), Md. Biju Mia (36), Md. Badsha Mia (35), Md. Jewel Mia (35), Md. Ashraful Islam (40), Jasim, and Asmat.

Meanwhile, Md. Idris Ali was acquitted as the charges against him could not be proven beyond reasonable doubt.

Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Md. Fazlul Haque said, On the night of May 25, 2025, in Nilakhia area of Bakshiganj upazila, a housewife was abducted and taken to an abandoned house where she was gang-raped.

Following the victim’s complaint, a case was filed at Bakshiganj Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

During the trial, seven out of nine witnesses testified in court. After reviewing medical reports, evidence, and other testimonies, the court found the allegations proven against seven accused and handed down the death penalty along with fines.
