A Cox’s Bazar court has convicted eight Myanmar nationals and sentenced them to life term imprisonment in a case filed over smuggling yaba in 2021.
The court also fined them Tk one lakh, in default of which they will have to serve one year more in jail.
Judge Nishat Sultana of Cox’s Bazar Additional District and Sessions Judge Court handed down the verdict in presence of the accused on Monday.
The convicts are Mohammad Doila, Md Robi Alam, Mohammad Alam, Md Shafikul, Md Rafik, Md Nur-e-Alam, Ali Ahmed and Nurul Amin. All are the citizens of Myanmar.
Cox’s Bazar Public Prosecutor (PP) Faridul Alam confirmed the matter to media.
Faridul Alam said in 2021, the Coast Guard apprehended eight Myanmar nationals while they were entering Bangladesh with 200,000 yaba pills.
Later, a case was filed against them with Teknaf police station in this connection.
