A Bangladeshi national was injured in gunfire by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) early this morning near the Chinakandi border area in Bishwambarpur upazila of Sunamganj.

According to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), citing local sources, the injured man crossed into Indian territory and sustained a gunshot wound. He later returned to Bangladesh, received medical attention, and subsequently went into hiding.

The injured individual has been identified as 25-year-old Md Shamsu Mia, a resident of Rajapara village in Bishwambarpur upazila.

In a press statement, the BGB reported that at approximately 3:45 AM, Shamsu and four others illegally crossed around 150 yards into Indian territory near the Chinakandi Border Outpost (BOP) in an attempt to smuggle goods.

At the time, a curfew was reportedly in place in the adjacent Indian areas. BSF personnel from Rajapara camp intercepted the group and fired shots to disperse them.

Shamsu was shot in the left shoulder but managed to flee back into Bangladesh along with the others.

He initially received treatment locally and was later admitted to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital. He was discharged after his condition improved, according to the BGB.

The BGB added that legal proceedings are underway against those who illegally entered India for smuggling purposes.

Lt Col AKM Zakaria Kadir, Commanding Officer of the BGB‍‍`s Sunamganj Battalion, confirmed that legal measures are being taken and security along the border has been heightened.
