A total of 20 individuals have been detained in relation to the incident, confirmed Gopalganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mir Md. Sajedur Rahman.
However, as of Thursday morning, no case had been filed in connection with Wednesday’s clashes surrounding the National Citizens’ Party’s (NCP) July March in Gopalganj.
Speaking around 9:45 am, OC Sajedur Rahman said preparations are underway to file a case.
The 20 detainees were handed over to the police station by joint security forces around 3:00 am. He also mentioned that the current situation in the city remains calm.
The city witnessed a day-long series of violent attacks, vandalism, arson, and crude bomb explosions on Wednesday.
The attacks were reportedly carried out by members of the ruling Awami League and its banned affiliate, the Chhatra League.
Clashes between the attackers and law enforcement led to the deaths of four individuals and left at least nine others shot, with more than 50 people injured overall.
A curfew was imposed following the unrest and is expected to remain in place until this evening.
After a tense night, the city of Gopalganj woke up to a quiet but uneasy atmosphere. However, as the day progressed, public movement increased across streets and marketplaces.
Municipal workers were seen clearing debris—bricks, bamboo, and wooden planks—from the roads.
