National Parliament Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah has passed away. He was 76.
According to media reports, the veteran politician breathed his last around 4pm on Friday(NY time) while undergoing treatment at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
He was suffering from cancer and had been undergoing treatment for nine months.
He was a former state minister and incumbent Member of Parliament representing Gaibandha-5 constituency.
He was a member of the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th Jatiya Sangsad as Jatiya Party candidate and defeated in the 8th Jatiya Sangsad elections of 2001 as a candidate of Bangladesh Awami League.
He was elected as a Member of Parliament from Gaibandha-5 constituency as a candidate of Bangladesh Awami League in the 9th in 2008, 10th in 2014 and 11th in 2019 parliamentary elections.
Rabbi was born in Gotia village of Saghata Upazilla of Gaibandha district on April 15, 1946.
He holds BA and LLB degrees. In 1968, he was awarded the Bangladesh Bar Council Certificate. Then in 1988 he became a member of the Supreme Court Bar Association.
Rabbi entered politics in 1958. He was then in eighth grade.
When the war of liberation for the independence of Bangladesh started in 1971, Rabbi joined the war of liberation. He fought in Sector 11.
He was also the Minister of State for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs in 1990.
He had been the Deputy Speaker since the 10th Parliament.
He left behind his three daughters and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.
His wife Anwara Rabbi passed away in May 2020.
